THE STANDARD FOR THE DIGITAL WORLD

DVB - Version 2.2

The Digital Video Broadcasting Project (DVB) is at the forefront of the development of the television systems of the future. Boasting some 240 members from all over the world, DVB was set up in 1993 to develop the framework for digital television. This CD-ROM, the second of its kind, contains the complete set of DVB approved documents. They are divided into the technical specifications which have made DVB famous the world over, and the guidelines document associated with them. We are also including the "Commercial Guidelines" documents which reflect the DVB's unique approach to standards and a series of policy statements.

Good luck with Digital Television!!

How do I use this table?

The table below lists all the DVB publications on the CD-ROM. It is broadly divided into different sections corresponding to the broadcasting area being covered. For example there is a series of standards covering transmission, interfacing and interactivity.

DVB Publications are broadly divided into the following types:

Facts about DVB-T
- by Martin Jacklin (DVB), Peter MacAvock (DVB) and Andrew Oliphant (BBC R&D) (December 1998)

This document started as an internal briefing on misinformation about DVB-T. It was called PCM110. Every module of the DVB Project has a large base of documents which are available only to DVB Members across the web on the DVB FTP service. This document was produced in the Promotions and Communications Module (PCM) recently and bears that reference. In the DVB Technical Module for example, documents number more than 2500!

The DVB Multimedia Home Platform
- by Georg Luetteke, Philips Consumer Electronics, chairman of the DVB Commercial Module MHP Group.

In 1997 the DVB Project expanded its scope to cover the Multimedia Home Platform (MHP) comprising the home terminal (set top box, TV, PC), its peripherals and the in-home digital network. The intention is to develop standards and/or guidelines to create a basis for an unfragmented horizontal market in Europe with full competition in the various layers of the business (value) chain. A crucial role will be played by the Application Programming Interface API. A comprehensive set of user and market based commercial requirements have been approved and are now used to produce specifications.

Results Summary for Australian 7 MHz Laboratory tests of DVB-T and ATSC DTTB modulation systems
- Australian Government Communications Laboratory Report 98/04, June 1998 - Compiled by Neil Pickford
Through June 1996 to June 1997, the Australian Government Communications Laboratory carried out exhaustive comparative tests of the Digital Terrestrial DVB-T and US ATSC DTV systems. Their conclusions were reported in a 15 kg document pack (!), of which this is the somewhat more bite-sized summary. DVB Cookbook

DVB-T and DMB in Mobile Environments
- by R. Burow (T-Berkom), K. Fazel (DLR), P. Hoeher (DLR), O. Klank (DTB), H. Kussmann (Bosch), P. Pogrzeba (T-Berkom), P. Robertson (DLR), and M. J. Ruf (Bosch)
This is a report of the MINT Project (Multimedia communications on Integrated Networks and Terminals), a research project funded by the German Ministry of Education, Science, Research, and Technology (BMBF). Mobile multimedia services (digital TV, sound, data, etc.) may become an important feature of terrestrial networks for a variety of applications. One possible scenario might be based on the use of the DVB-T specifications that may allow a higher data rate (up to 12 Mbit/s) using an 8-MHz UHF-channel. DVB Cookbook

Receiver Opportunities of World DTTB Standards - A Receiver Manufacturer's view
- by Cornelis (Koen) M. Huizer and Jan van der Meer (Philips Digital Video Systems)
The introduction of Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcast in the USA and the UK is imminent. This paper analyses the emerging opportunities for DTTB receivers. First we consider why DTTB services are attractive and how to get a successful receiver business. Secondly, a number of different segments in the receiver market will be distinguished. Each of these segments pose different requirements with respect to scope and nature of the standards governing the product specifications. This is followed by two case studies to indicate which products are prime candidates for the DTTB launch in the USA and the UK. DVB Cookbook

DVB-T Mobile Reception trials in Cologne
- DTTV-SA Report from Cologne Trials of Mobile DVB-T reception
In 1997, the DTTV-SA project completed exhaustive trials of mobile DVB-T reception in the German city of Cologne, as reported in DVB NEWS 3.3 and 3.1. This document up to now only available to members of the DVB Project details the technical findings of these trials. DVB Cookbook

Report on Multidimensional DVB-T Interoperability Tests
- ACTS Validate Project Rennes, 8-12 June 1998
VALIDATE partners carried out multidimensional interoperability tests in June 1998. Test signals were broadcast from a transmitter at St-Pern and received at CCETT in Rennes. A wide range of DVB-T equipment from different manufacturers was tested. The successful results of all of these tests prove the interoperability of DVB-T equipment from different manufacturers. DVB Cookbook

DVB Audio
- Leon van de Kerkhof (Philips)
DVB uses the MPEG-2 Layer II audio system (sometimes known as "MUSICAM"). This system, developed by the international partners of the MPEG group, has clear advantages over the ATSC's proprietary Dolby AC-3 audio system, i.e. it is an open standard, it is backwards compatible to MPEG-1 and it is very easy to code for both (6 channel) surround sound and stereo sound in the same transport stream. DVB Cookbook

The DVB Cookbook
- Ulrich Reimers
(Chairman of the DVB Technical Module). This document, formally titled DVB Blue Book A20, is also known informally as the "DVB Cookbook". It provides a simple overview of the DVB standards. DVB Cookbook

The Multimedia Home Platform
- Jean-Pierre Evain (EBU)
DVB specifications for the API and the Multimedia Home Platform will be produced in Summer 1998 by the DVB Technical Module. Digital TV - Beyond Sound and Vision
- Martin Jacklin
There is much more to Digital TV than MPEG-2 video and audio compression and RF modulation. There are many other operational issues to take care of, from Service Information to Conditional Access. Having great pictures and surround sound is only the tip of the iceberg. DVB Cookbook

DTTB - Why choose DVB-T
- Martin Jacklin
Around the world, markets and regulatory bodies are considering the adoption of one of three emerging Digital Terrestrial TV Broadcasting (DTTB) standards. Here are the main issues the regulator will take into account. They are also the reasons why we think the choice will be DVB-T. DVB Cookbook
